Previously, LG Chem is accelerating its entry into the global battery recycling market by investing 60 billion won in Li-Cycle, the largest battery recycling company in North America, together with LG Energy Solutions last year.

“Through this quota Investment in Jaeyoungtech, we will lay the groundwork for entering the global battery recycling business,” said Lee Sang-hyeop, managing director of LG Chem’s management strategy.

LG화학이 배터리 리사이클링 전문업체 재영텍과 240억원 규모 지분투자 계약을 체결했다고 21일 밝혔다. 이를 통해 LG화학은 재영텍과 북미 배터리 재활용 시장 진출을 가속화할 계획이다.

양사는 지분투자를 기반으로 오는 2023년 말 북미 지역에서 배터리 리사이클링 합작법인을 설립할 계획이다. LG화학은 비즈니스 모델 구축 등 사업 전반을 이끌고, 재영텍은 공장 설계 등 기술 관련 사항을 담당한다.

LG화학 관계자는 "이번 지분투자와 더불어 북미에 공급망을 확보한 현지 업체들과의 협업을 통해 글로벌 배터리 리사이클링 시장을 선점할 방침"이라고 밝혔다.

재영텍은 2차 전지 업체가 쓰고 남은 리튬 폐기물이나 다 쓴 전지에서 고순도의 리튬을 뽑아내는 기술력을 갖췄다. 기존 공법과 달리 전지 소재에 열을 가해 리튬을 먼저 추출하고, 망간·코발트·니켈은 후공정에서 처리하는 방식을 사용한다. 공정이 단순하고, 망간·코발트·니켈의 순도는 기존 공법과 동일한 수준을 유지하면서도 고순도의 리튬을 뽑아낼 수 있다. 리튬 회수율은 85% 이상으로 세계 최고 수준으로 평가된다.

앞서 LG화학은 지난해 LG에너지솔루션과 함께 북미 최대 배터리 리사이클링 업체인 ‘라이-사이클(Li-Cycle)’에 600억원을 투자하는 등 글로벌 배터리 재활용 시장 진출을 가속화하고 있다. 

LG화학 이상협 경영전략담당 상무는 “이번 지분투자를 통해 글로벌 배터리 리사이클링 사업 진출의 초석을 마련할 것”이라며, “차별적인 기술로 경쟁력을 확보하고 향후 순환경제 구축에 앞장서겠다”라고 말했다.
