On the 18th, Taiwanese media including Liberty Times broke the news that harmful ingredient was detected in some products of Nongshim Shin Ramyun Black exported to Taiwan.

According to reports, the day before, disclosing 10 cases of products that failed the customs inspection of food imported from abroad, Pesticide residues were detected, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA), said in a statement.

Taiwan Ministry of Health and Welfare explained that 0.075mg/kg of the carcinogen 'ethylene oxide' (EO) was detected in the soup powder in a pesticide residue test for 'Shin Ramyun Black Tofu Kimchi Bowl'.

Then, it was announced that all 1,000 boxes and 1,128 kg were returned or discarded according to the return policy, as they did not meet the standards for pesticide residues allowed under Article 15 of the Taiwan Food Safety and Hygiene Management Act. 

However, Nongshim explained that the detacted ingredient was not carcinogen 'EO' but '2-chloroethanol (2-CE)'. The 2-CE is a harmful substance that exists in the environment and can occur as a by-product of EO, a pesticide component, but is not classified as a carcinogen.

Meanwhile, TFDA announced that EO was detected in ramen for export, but this is known to be because the amount of 2-CE detected was converted into EO. In addition, the Taiwan standard was 0.055 mg/kg, the converted EO figure exceeded by 0.02 mg/kg. However, it is less than the 30mg/kg provisional standard for 2-CE announced by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in August 2021. 

Nongshim believes that the 2-CE ingredient was detected because of the raw material used in the product. However, this raw ingredient was not used in products for domestic sale, and 2-CE was not detected in domestic products.

■신라면블랙 유해성분 검출, 대만 발칵…농심 "국내 제품은 안전"

18일 자유시보 등 대만언론은 대만에 수출된 농심 신라면블랙 일부 제품에서 유해성분이 검출됐다고 일제히 보도했다. 

보도에 따르면 대만 위생복리부 식품약물관리서(식약서·TFDA)는 전날 외국에서 수입한 식품 통관검사에서 불합격한 제품 10건을 공개하면서 이같이 밝혔다. 식약서는 '신라면 블랙 두부김치 사발'에 대한 잔류농약 검사에서 발암물질 '에틸렌옥사이드'(EO) 0.075mg/kg이 스프에서 검출됐다고 설명했다. 

이어 대만 식품안전위생관리법 제15조에 따른 잔류농약 허용량 기준에 부합하지 않아 규정대로 1000 상자, 1128kg을 전수 반송이나 폐기한다고 전했다. 그러나 농심은 "검출된 성분은 발암물질 'EO'가 아닌, '2-클로로에탄올(2-CE)'이다"라고 설명했다. 2-CE는 환경에 존재하기도 하고 농약 성분인 EO의 부산물로 발생할 수 있는 유해물질이지만, 발암물질로는 분류되지 않는다.

한편 대만 식약서는 수출용 라면에서 EO가 검출됐다고 발표했는데 이는 2-CE 검출량을 EO 수치로 환산했기 때문인 것으로 알려졌다. 또 대만 기준치는 0.055mg/kg인데 환산한 EO 수치는 이를 0.02mg/kg 초과했다. 다만 식품의약품안전처가 2021년 8월 발표한 2-CE 잠정기준인 30mg/kg 보다는 적은 양이다. 농심은 해당 제품에 사용한 원료 때문에 2-CE 성분이 나온 것으로 보고 있다. 다만 이 원료는 국내 판매용 제품에는 쓰지 않았고, 국내 제품에서는 2-CE가 검출되지 않았다.

농심 관계자는 "이번 사안을 계기로 정밀 분석기기를 보강해 분석능력을 대폭 늘릴 것"이라며 "원료 문제도 재발하지 않도록 모니터링을 더 강화할 계획"이라고 말했다.
