美 질병통제예방센터, 5-11세 코로나 백신 접종 승인 Children ages 5 to 11 can now get a Covid-19 vaccine in the US [글로벌 포커스]

미국 질병통제예방센터가 5~11세 어린이를 대상으로 한 코로나 백신 접종을 지난 2일(현지시간) 최종 승인했다. 이로써 미 전역에서백신 클리닉, 어린이 병원 및 소아과 진료소 등을 통해 화이자 백신의 3분의 1에 해당하는 어린이용 백신 접종이 본격화 할 전망이다. 

조 바이든 대통령은 "5-11세 어린이 백신 접종이 가능해져 안도와 축하의 메세지를 전한다"며 "전국 약 2만여 곳에서 코로나 백신 접종을 받을 수 있을 것"이라고 말했다. 

이어 바이든 대통령은 "미 전역 6000여개 학교에는 이미 진료소 설치가 계획됐고 지역 보건 센터와 약국, 학교 등을 통해 백신을 제공할 계획"이라며 "어린이 백신 접종은 곧 2만여 곳에서 가능할 것이다"고 덧붙였다. 

백악관 코로나 대응 제프 지엔츠는 "지난 금요일 FDA의 승인에 따라 팀은 5-11세 어린이를 위해 특별히 제조된 백신을 즉시 특수 용기에 포장하기 시작했으며 전국의 수천 개 예방 접종 장소에 수백만 회분을 배송하기 위해 24시간 근무체계로 대응하고 있다"고 전했다. 

앤서니 파우치 박사는 "현재 미국에서는 5~11세 사이의 어린이 8300명이 코로나로 입원했으며 이 중 3분의 1이 집중 치료가 필요한 상태"라며 "이 연령대의 어린이 중 최소 94명이 코로나 감염으로 사망했다"고 밝혔다. 

이어 파우치 박사는 “어린이와 성인 모두 코로나바이러스 감염에 똑같이 취약하다”며 "우리는 어린이의 발병률과 전파율을 과소 평가해서는 안된다"고 강조했다. 

한편, 미국에 이어 브라질에서도 5~11세 어린이 백신 접종이 곧 승인될 것으로 전망된다.
