The K-Consortium signed a private-public mix partnership agreement at the request of Iraq in July last year.

The Al Faw Port Development Project in Iraq is a project that aims to build the largest port in the Middle East. Daewoo E&C is carrying out the port infrastructure construction work, which is the first stage of this port project, including reclamation of the terminal container site, quay wall construction, and dredging.

대우건설은 지난 14일 조승환 해양수산부 장관과 백정완 대우건설 사장이 이라크 알포(Al Faw) 항만 건설현장을 방문해 알포 항만 사업에 기업의 진출 확대방안과 K-컨소시엄(대우건설·부산항만공사·SM상선경인터미널)의 항만 운영사업 추진 방안에 대해 논의했다고 20일 밝혔다.
K-컨소시엄은 작년 7월 이라크의 요청으로 민관 합동의 공동 참여 협약을 체결한 바 있다.
조 장관과 백 사장은 이튿날인 지난 15일 바그다드로 이동해 라자크 알 사다위(Razak Muhaibes El Saadawi) 교통부 장관, 자바르 알하이다리(Mr. Jabbar Thajil Al-Haidari) 국방부 차관, 하미드 나임 쿠다이르 압둘라 알가지(Hamid Naim Khudair Abdullah Al-Ghazi) 이라크 내각 사무총장을 예방해 한국 기업의 재건시장 사업 등에 참여가 확대될 수 있도록 관심과 지원을 요청했다.
조승환 장관은 “한국기업은 이라크에서 50년 반세기 역사를 함께 해왔고, 그 성실함과 우수성을 보여주고 있다”며 한국 기업의 수주를 지원했다.
라자크 알 사다위 이라크 교통부 장관은 “한국기업의 기술력과 신뢰는 이미 확인했으며 언제든지 참여를 환영한다”고 화답했다.
이라크 알포 항만 개발 사업은 중동지역 최대 항만 건설을 목표로 하는 프로젝트이다. 대우건설은 이 항만사업의 첫 단계인 컨테이너터미널 부지매립, 안벽공사, 준설공사 등 항만 기반조성공사를 진행하고 있으며, 항만 연결도로와 중동지역 최초의 침매터널(총 길이 2.8km) 공사도 진행 중에 있다.
대우건설 관계자는 “이번 해양수산부 장관의 이라크 방문을 계기로 항만 운영사업의 기회를 창출하고 이라크 시장에서의 입지를 더 확고히 할 수 있게 되었다”고 전했다.
