▶New drugs FEXUCLUE and Envlo are gaining momentum in entering the 3 trillion won Brazilian anti-ulcer drug and diabetes treatment market
Daewoong Pharmaceutical(Daewoong) recently announced that it had been notified of the Zero Observation certification results from the GMP inspection by The Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA_Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária) conducted for new approval of new drugs' FEXUCLUE' and 'Envlo'
The Brazilian ANVISA inspection team visited Daewoong's Osong Smart Plant for three days starting September 4 and conducted an intensive inspection.
Through this certification result, Daewoong's entry into the Central and South American markets has gained further momentum. Daewoong's new drug for gastroesophageal reflux disease, FEXUCLUE, is under review for approval in Brazil and is scheduled to be released next year. Envlo, a diabetes drug, is in the preparation stage for application for approval in Brazil.
ANVISA's GMP review is as strict and demanding as the FDA's cGMP.
ANVISA actively conducts overseas on-site inspections and carefully examines on-site drug quality control as well as data integrity, manufacturing facilities, and production process compliance with GMP before deciding on the review.
The Osong Plant received level 4 certification from the 'Smart Manufacturing Innovation Promotion Team' under the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
ANVISA highly evaluated the intelligent process system of the Osong plant. Stage 4, just before stage 5, the highest stage of an intelligent plant, allows for proactive response and decision-making optimization, making it possible to respond proactively through process operation simulation.
Daewoong Pharmaceutical plans to actively challenge GMP certification in big global markets such as the US and Europe through smart processes.
Jeon Seung-Ho, CEO of Daewoong Pharmaceutical, said, "We will continue to develop the Osong factory and make it a level 5 smart factory." He added, "Furthermore, we will use it as a base for innovative new drugs and aim to expand into 100 countries by 2027 for FEXUCLUE and 50 countries by 2030 for Envlo. And We will do our best to achieve this."
According to pharmaceutical market research firm IQVIA Global MIDAS, as of last year, the Brazilian anti-ulcer drug market size was $734.3 million (approximately KRW 977 billion), and the diabetes market size was $1.537.42 billion (about KRW 2.045 trillion), the largest among South American markets.

대웅제약은 신약 ‘펙수클루’와 ‘엔블로’의 신규 허가를 위해 진행한 브라질 식의약품 감시국 (ANVISA_Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária)의 GMP 실사에서 '지적사항 제로(Zero Observation) 인증 결과를 통보 받았다고 최근 밝혔다.
브라질 실사단은 지난 9월 4일부터 3일간 대웅제약의 오송 스마트 공장을 찾아 강도 높은 실사를 진행했다.
이번 인증결과를 통해 대웅제약의 중남미 시장 진출은 더욱 탄력을 받게 됐다. 대웅제약의 위식도역류질환 신약 펙수클루는 브라질 허가 심사 중으로 내년 발매할 계획이고, 당뇨병 신약 엔블로는 브라질 허가신청 준비 단계다.
실사단의 GMP 심사는 FDA의 cGMP 만큼 까다롭고 난이도가 높다.
실제로 브라질 실사단은 해외 현장 실사를 활발히 진행하며, 현장에서 의약품 품질관리는 물론 Data Integrity, 제조설비 및 생산공정 GMP 준수여부 등을 꼼꼼히 살펴보고 심사를 결정한다.
대웅제약 오송 스마트공장은 중소벤처기업부 산하 ‘스마트제조혁신추진단’으로부터 4단계를 인증을 받았다.
실사단은 오송 공장의 스마트공정 시스템을 높게 평가했다. 스마트공장 최고 단계인 5단계 직전인 4단계는 사전 대응 및 의사결정 최적화가 가능해 공정운영 시뮬레이션을 통해 사전 대응이 가능하다. 이는 데이터 완결성을 입증할 수 있는 부분이다.
대웅제약은 스마트공정을 통해 미국, 유럽 등 글로벌 big market GMP 인증에도 적극 도전할 계획이다.
전승호 대웅제약 대표는 “오송공장을 지속적으로 발전시켜 레벨 5단계의 스마트팩토리로 만들겠다”며 “나아가 혁신신약 전진기지로 삼아 펙수클루의 2027년 100개국 진출과 엔블로의 2030년 50개국 진출 목표를 이뤄낼 수 있도록 하겠다”고 말했다.
의약품시장조사기관 IQVIA Global MIDAS 따르면 지난해 기준 브라질 항궤양제 시장규모는 7억3430만달러(약 9770억원), 당뇨 시장규모는 15억3742만달러(약 2조450억원)로 남미시장 중 가장 크다.
