SK Ecoplant and its subsidiary TES announced on the 27th that they would establish a waste battery recycling joint venture (J.V.) in Kentucky with Ascend Elements, a U.S. waste battery recycling company, and build a pretreatment plant.

This joint venture is the U.S.'s first Korean-American waste battery recycling company, with 64% ownership of SK Eco Plant, 11% of Tess, and 25% of Ascend Elements.

Through this plant, SK Ecoplant plans to disassemble and crush scrap, a defective product generated during the electric vehicle battery production process, collect waste batteries, and even extract black mass, which is the stage before pulling battery raw materials.

This factory will be built with an area of ​​9,290㎡ in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, USA. The total investment cost is about 65.8 million dollars (about KRW 88.3 billion), and it is possible to produce 12,000 tons of black mass annually. Construction begins in November, with the whole operation scheduled for January 2025.

Through this cooperation, the three companies have secured preprocessing facilities to become the basis of the electric vehicle battery value chain in the United States, the world's largest market. This allows them to dominate the U.S.' battery belt' where battery manufacturers are concentrated. In addition, as both pre and post-processing waste battery recycling becomes possible through collaboration, a strong synergy effect is expected, and a foundation has been laid for expanding our position in the North American market.

Near the plant, Ascend Elements is building North America's first cathode material precursor plant to supply 750,000 electric vehicles annually with a USD 480 million subsidy from the U.S. government. Through this joint venture, both pre & post-processing of battery recycling by the three companies will be possible.

Kentucky is a region rapidly emerging as a 'Battery Belt' in the U.S., where the manufacturing plants of global battery companies are concentrated.

SK Ecoplant invested USD 60.84 million twice, including $50 million in August last year and $10.84 million in April this year. Ascend Elements also raised $460 million, increasing its corporate value to around 2 trillion won. Major investors include Singapore's state-run investment company Temasek, the Decarbonization Fund established by global asset management company BlackRock and Temasek, and the Qatar Investment Authority.

Park Kyung-il, CEO of SK Ecoplant, said, "We have put a lot of effort into internalizing technology for the entire waste battery recycling process and securing major bases worldwide. With the establishment of this joint venture and the construction of a factory, we have now secured sufficient competitiveness in the waste battery field," and he added, "Based on this, we will begin to dominate the global waste battery market in earnest."

SK에코플랜트와 자회사 테스(TES)가 미국 폐배터리 재활용 기업 어센드 엘리먼츠(Ascend Elements)와 함께 켄터키주에 폐배터리 재활용 합작법인(JV)을 설립하고 전처리 공장을 건설한다고 27일 밝혔다.

이번 합작법인은 미국 내 첫 한∙미 합작 폐배터리 재활용 기업으로, 지분율은 SK에코플랜트 64%, 테스 11%, 어센드 엘리먼츠 25%다.

SK에코플랜트는 이 공장을 통해 전기차 배터리 생산과정에서 발생하는 불량품인 스크랩(Scrap)과 수거한 폐배터리 등을 분해∙파쇄하고 배터리 원료 추출 전단계인 블랙매스까지 추출할 예정이다. 

이 공장은 미국 켄터키주 홉킨스빌에 9290㎡ 규모로 조성된다. 총 투자비는 약 6580만달러(한화 약 883억원)이며, 연 1만2000톤의 블랙매스 생산이 가능하다. 착공은 오는 11월로 2025년 1월 본격 가동할 계획이다.

3사는 이번 협력을 통해 세계 최대 시장으로 불리는 미국에서 전기차 배터리 밸류체인의 기반이 될 전처리 설비를 확보함으로써 배터리 제조사가 밀집해 있는 미국 ‘배터리 벨트’를 선점할 수 있게 됐습니다. 또 협업을 통한 폐배터리 재활용 전∙후처리가 모두 가능해짐에 따라 강력한 시너지 효과도 기대되며, 북미 시장에서의 입지를 넓힐 수 있는 발판을 마련하게 됐습니다.

공장 인근에는 어센드 엘리먼츠가 미국 정부로부터 4억8000만달러의 보조금을 받아 연간 75만대의 전기차에 공급할 수 있는 북미 최초 양극재용 전구체 공장을 건설 중이다. 이번 합작투자를 통해 3사의 배터리 재활용 전∙후처리가 모두 가능해진다. 

미국 켄터키주는 ‘배터리 벨트’로 급부상하고 있는 지역이다. SK에코플랜트는 글로벌 배터리 기업의 제조공장이 밀집해 있는 미국에서 3사는 이번 협력을 통해 세계 최대 시장으로 불리는 미국에서 전기차 배터리 밸류체인의 기반이 될 전처리 설비를 확보함으로써 배터리 제조사가 밀집해 있는 미국 ‘배터리 벨트’를 선점할 수 있게 됐습니다. 또 협업을 통한 폐배터리 재활용 전∙후처리가 모두 가능해짐에 따라 강력한 시너지 효과도 기대되며, 북미 시장에서의 입지를 넓힐 수 있는 발판을 마련하게 됐습니다. SK 에코플랜트는 스크랩 물량확보가 용이할 것으로 보고 있다.  

SK에코플랜트는 지난해 8월 5000만달러, 올해 4월 1084만달러 등 두차례에 걸쳐 총 6084만 달러를 투자했다. 어센드 엘리먼츠도 4억6000만 달러를 모집하면서 기업가치가 2조 원 대로 늘었다. 주요 투자자는 싱가포르 국영 투자회사인 테마섹(Temasek), 글로벌 자산운용사 블랙록(BlackRock)과 테마섹이 함께 설립한 탈탄소화 펀드(Decarbonization Fund), 카타르 투자청 등이다.  

박경일 SK에코플랜트 사장은 “그간 폐배터리 재활용 전 과정에 대한 기술 내재화와 전 세계 주요 거점 확보에 많은 공을 들였다”며, “이번 합작법인 설립과 공장 건설까지 더해져 이제는 폐배터리 분야 충분한 경쟁력을 확보했으며, 이를 바탕으로 글로벌 폐배터리 시장 선점을 본격화 하겠다”고 밝혔다.
