COSMAX, a global ODM company, raised its K-Beauty status by winning the top prize in the 'cosmetics category' of the Halal Awards in Indonesia, the world's largest halal market.

COSMAX announced on the 20th that it won the grand prize in the cosmetics category at the 'Halal Awards 2023' ceremony hosted by LPPOM MUI, held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on the 4th.

COSMAX is the first Korean company that entered Indonesia to receive this award.

Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country and where about 90% of the population is Muslim, is considered the world's largest halal market. Mui Halal Examiner, who hosted this event, is a food, medicine, and cosmetics halal certification assessor under the Indonesian Muslim Council (MUI). It is considered one of the world's top three halal certification organizations, Malaysia's JAKIM and Singapore's MUIS.

COSMAX-Indonesia has been producing all products as halal since obtaining MUI Halal certification in February 2016. The cumulative number of halal products registered by Cosmax is approximately 2380, making it one of the companies that have recorded the most significant number of halal products in the cosmetics sector in Indonesia.

COSMAX also maximizes local research and development results through industry-academia cooperation with major Indonesian universities. In July of this year, COSMAX focused on securing differentiated raw materials by combining its unique K-beauty technology with Indonesian native plants, such as introducing 'The Arum', a branding based on Indonesian native plant materials.

Min-Kyung Jeong, CEO of COSMAX Indonesia, said, "This award is significant as it is the result of recognition of our localization strategy and halal beauty research and development technology." He added, "We will continue to work hard to discover innovative materials using local native plants, thereby strengthening the status of K-beauty in Indonesia, the world's largest halal market."

Meanwhile, Indonesian Vice President Ma'ruf Amin and Minister of Economic Coordination Airlangga Hartarto attended this event online. Vice President Ma'ruf Amin expressed his determination to lead the way in obtaining halal certification for 10 million products by 2024.

In October 2017, the Indonesian government enacted the 'Halal Guarantee Act', which requires obtaining halal certification for all products such as food, medicine, and cosmetics imported, distributed, and sold in Indonesia. Accordingly, interest in halal beauty products is increasing as it becomes mandatory to obtain halal certification for pharmaceuticals and health-functional foods from 2024 and cosmetics from 2026.

글로벌 화장품 연구·개발·생산(ODM) 기업 코스맥스가 세계 최대 할랄 시장인 인도네시아에서 할랄 어워드 '화장품 부문' 최우수상을 수상하며 K-Beauty 위상을 높였다.

코스맥스는 지난 4일 인도네시아 자카르타에서 진행한 무이 할랄 심사원(LPPOM MUI) 주최 ‘할랄 어워드 2023’ 시상식에서 화장품 부문 최우수상을 수상했다고 20일 밝혔다. 

인도네시아에 진출한 한국계 기업 중 최초 수상 사례다.

세계 4위 인구 대국이자 인구의 약 90%가 무슬림인 인도네시아는 세계 최대 할랄 시장으로 꼽힌다. 이번 행사를 주최한 무이 할랄 심사원은 인도네시아 무슬림협의회(MUI) 산하 식품∙의약품∙화장품 할랄 인증 심사원이다. 말레이시아의 JAKIM(자킴), 싱가포르의 MUIS(무이스)와 더불어 세계 3대 할랄 인증기관으로 평가받는다. 

코스맥스인도네시아는 2016년 2월 MUI 할랄 인증을 취득한 후 전 제품을 할랄 제품으로 생산하고 있다. 코스맥스가 등록한 누적 할랄 제품 수는 2380여 개로 인도네시아 내 화장품 부문에서 가장 많은 할랄 제품을 등록한 기업 중 하나로 꼽힌다.

코스맥스는 인도네시아 주요 대학과 산학협력을 통해 현지 연구개발 성과도 극대화하고 있다. 올해 7월 인도네시아 자생식물 소재 브랜딩 ‘The’Arum(더 아름)’을 선보이는 등 독자적인 K뷰티 기술력을 인도네시아 자생식물에 접목해 차별화된 원료 확보에 주력하고 있다.

정민경 코스맥스인도네시아 법인장은 “이번 수상은 코스맥스의 현지화 전략 및 할랄 뷰티 연구개발 기술력을 인정받은 결과라 무척 뜻깊다”며 “앞으로도 현지 자생식물 활용 혁신 소재 발굴 등 글로벌 최대 할랄 시장인 인도네시아에서 K뷰티의 위상을 높일 수 있도록 힘쓰겠다”고 말했다.

한편, 이번 행사에는 마루프 아민(Ma’ruf Amin) 인도네시아 부통령, 아이르랑가 하타토(Airlangga Hartarto) 인도네시아 경제조정부 장관 등이 온라인으로 참석했다. 마루프 아민 부통령은 2024년까지 1,000만 제품의 할랄 인증 취득을 이끌겠다는 의지를 표명했다.

인도네시아 정부는 2017년 10월 인도네시아 내 유입, 유통, 판매되는 △식품 △의약품 △화장품 등 모든 제품에 대해 할랄 인증 취득 의무화를 골자로 하는 ‘할랄 보증법’을 제정했다. 이에 따라 2024년에는 의약품 및 건강기능식품, 2026년부터는 화장품에 대한 할랄 인증 취득 의무화가 시행되는 만큼 할랄 뷰티 제품에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있다.
