Daewoong Pharmaceutical (Daewoong) recently announced that it has obtained a migraine treatment patent for the botulinum toxin product ‘Nabota’ in the United States.
Daewoong’s U.S. partner AEON Biopharma received a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for botulinum toxin ABP-450 (Korean name Nabota) as ‘Neurotoxin Compositions for Use in Treating Headache.’
AEON Biopharma obtained a patent in recognition of improving the convenience of use and reducing side effects by reducing the number of administrations and changing the administration location compared to existing botulinum toxin products. The USPTO guarantees exclusive rights to this patent until 2041.
Daewoong believes that with the acquisition of Nabota’s migraine patent, the phase 2 clinical trial for treating episodic migraine and chronic migraine that AEON Biopharma is conducting in the United States will continue smoothly.
Daewoong Pharmaceutical Vice President Park Seong-soo said, “With the acquisition of Nabota’s migraine patent, we expect to become the second person in the world to receive approval for migraine treatment indications.” He added, “Through close cooperation with Ion Biopharma, we will achieve Nabota’s rapid entry into the market for treatment indications”

대웅제약 ‘나보타’, 美서 편두통 치료 특허…2041년까지 독점권

대웅제약이 보툴리눔 톡신 제제 ‘나보타’의 편두통 치료 특허를 미국에서 획득했다고 최근 밝혔다.
이번 특허 획득은 대웅제약의 미국 파트너사 이온바이오파마(AEON Biopharma)가 미국 특허청(USPTO)으로부터 보툴리눔 톡신 ABP-450(한국 제품명 나보타)에 대해 ‘편두통 치료용 신경독소 조성물'로 특허를 받았다.
이온바이오파마는 기존 보툴리눔 톡신 제제에 비해 투여 횟수를 줄이고, 투여 위치도 변경해 사용 편의성을 개선하고 부작용을 줄인 점을 인정받아 특허를 획득했다. 미국 특허청은 이 특허에 대해 2041년까지 독점적 권리를 보장한다.
대웅제약은 이번 나보타의 편두통 특허 획득으로 이온바이오파마가 미국에서 진행 중인 간헐적 편두통, 만성 편두통 치료를 위한 임상 2상도 순조롭게 이어질 것으로 보고 있다.
박성수 대웅제약 부사장은 “이번 나보타의 편두통 특허 획득으로 편두통 치료 적응증 허가도 세계 두번째로 받게 될 것으로 기대한다”라며 “이온바이오파마와 긴밀한 협력을 통해 나보타의 신속한 치료 적응증 시장 진입을 이뤄낼 것”이라고 밝혔다.
