There was an accident in which part of the ceiling collapsed in the underground parking lot of Homeplus in Songdo International City, Incheon. The store was open at the time of the accident.

According to Yeonsu-gu and Homeplus, on the 24th, at 8:30 pm the previous day, a part of the ceiling in the basement 2nd-floor parking lot of the Homeplus Songdo branch broke and fell to the floor. There were no casualties in the accident, but as ceiling materials fell and dust flew, customers who visited the store were surprised and evacuated.

One store user posted a picture of the scene on social media: "The ceiling collapsed behind my car, and dust flew around, but there was no announcement from Homeplus, and the staff were busy cleaning the site without explanation." He continued, "I should feel fortunate that people weren't hurt, but I was angry and scared at Homeplus' inaction."

It is understood that there has yet to be a single related report received by the fire department or the police to date.

Homeplus said, "We are taking safety measures in the underground parking lot where the accident occurred and are figuring out the details."

On the 24th, Homeplus announced, "We apologize for causing concern to our customers" through an apology titled 'Regarding removing the ceiling finish in the underground parking lot of the Songdo branch'.

Homeplus said, "At around 20:20 on the 23rd, a portion of the ceiling in the underground parking lot of the Songdo branch fell off the finishing material. Immediately after the accident occurred, we blocked entry to the parking lot and completed the removal of debris. There were no casualties or vehicle damage through quick action."

Add, "The same accident occurred in 2019, and it is deplorable that the accident reoccurred even though we asked the building lessor and the parking lot constructor to rebuild to ensure customer safety completely."

A Homeplus official said, "Since something similar has happened before, we are checking the exact cause of the accident."

Previously, in April 2019, at the Homeplus Songdo branch, the ceiling finish of the parking lot on the second basement floor was broken, and the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority ordered the closure of the underground parking lot and safety inspection measures.

However, the construction company denied this to Korea Duty-Free News on the morning of the 24th, saying, "As a result of the police investigation, our company has concluded that there is no charge." The 'truth game' continues between Homeplus, the landlord, and H Construction.

Meanwhile, in grapeseed oil products imported and sold by Homeplus, the content of benzopyrene exceeds the standard and is undergoing a recall procedure. According to Food Safety Nara, Homeplus 'Signature Grapeseed Oil' is being suspended and recalled due to non-compliance with benzopyrene standards and specifications.

The recall target is a product with an expiration date of May 1, 2024, and the net content is 1,000ml. Benzopyrene is an environmental hormone substance that causes various cancers and causes mutations. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) under the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated benzopyrene as a human carcinogen.

■홈플러스, 안전불감 책임회피·검수관리 허술...'무너지고 회수하고→고객 신뢰 추락'

인천 송도국제도시 홈플러스 지하 주차장에서 천장 일부가 무너지는 사고가 발생했다. 해당 매장은 사고 당시 한창 영업 중이었다.

24일 연수구와 홈플러스에 따르면 전날 오후 8시 30분께 홈플러스 송도점 지하 2층 주차장 천장 일부분이 부서져 바닥으로 떨어졌다. 이 사고로 인명 피해는 없었으나 천장 자재가 떨어지고 먼지가 날리면서 매장을 방문한 고객들이 놀라고 대피하는 소동이 벌어졌다.

한 매장 이용객은 현장 사진을 SNS에 올리고 게시글을 통해 "내 차 바로 뒤로 천장이 무너져 먼지가 휘날렸는데 홈플러스 측에서는 안내 방송도 없었고 직원들은 설명도 없이 현장을 급하게 치우기에 바빴다"고 밝혔다. 이어 "사람들이 안 다쳤으니, 다행이라는 생각이 들어야 하는데, 홈플러스의 무대응에 화도 나고 무서웠다"는 내용을 전했다.

소방 당국이나 경찰에 접수된 관련 신고는 현재까지 단 한 건도 없는 것으로 파악됐다.

홈플러스는 "사고가 난 지하 주차장에 안전 조치를 하고 구체적인 경위를 파악하고 있다"고 전했다.

홈플러스는 24일 '송도점 지하 주차장 천장 마감재 탈락 관련'이라는 사과문을 통해 "고객 여러분께 심려를 끼쳐 죄송하다"는 입장을 밝혔다.

홈플러스는 "23일 20시 20분경 송도점 지하 주차장 천장 일부에서 마감재 탈락이 발생했다. 당사는 사고 발생 즉시 주차장 입차를 차단하고 잔해물 제거를 완료했다. 빠른 조치를 통해 인명이나 차량 피해는 없었다"고 변명했다.

이어 "2019년에도 동일한 사고가 발생해 고객 안전 확보를 위해 건물 임대인과 주차장 시공사에 전면 재시공을 요구했음에도 사고가 재발생하게 되어 매우 안타깝게 생각한다"며 "해당 건으로 인해 임대인과 시공사 간에 소송도 진행 중이다"고 밝혔다.

홈플러스 관계자는 "이전에도 비슷한 일이 발생한 적이 있어 정확한 사고 원인을 확인하고 있다"며 "자세한 내용은 내부적으로 법무 검토를 하고 있어서 추가적인 내용은 전달할 수 없다"고 말했다.

앞서 2019년 4월에도 홈플러스 송도점에서는 지하 2층 주차장 천장 마감재가 부서져 내려 인천경제자유구역청으로부터 지하 주차장 폐쇄와 안전 점검 조치 명령을 받았다.

그러나 해당 건설사는 24일 오전 한국면세뉴스에 "경찰 조사 결과 우리 회사는 '혐의없음'으로 결론 났다"며 이를 부인했다. 홈플러스와 임대인, H 건설 등 3자 간에 '진실 게임'이 이어지는 양상이다.

한편 홈플러스가 수입·판매한 포도씨유 제품에서는 벤조피렌 함량이 기준치를 초과해 회수 절차를 밟고 있다. 식품안전나라에 따르면 홈플러스의 '시그니처 포도씨유'는 벤조피렌 기준·규격 부적합으로 판매 중단, 회수 조치가 진행 중이다.

회수 대상은 유통기한이 2024년 5월 1일인 제품으로 내용량은 1,000ml이다. 벤조피렌은 각종 암을 유발하고 돌연변이를 일으키는 환경호르몬 물질이다. 세계보건기구(WHO) 산하 국제암연구소(IARC)는 벤조피렌을 인체 발암물질로 지정했다.
