Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-Yong visited three Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Egypt, to continue 'Holiday Field Management' during the Chuseok(Korean Thanksgiving Day). Chairman Lee has carried out global holiday field management for 10 years since 2014.
Chairman Lee inspected the construction site of the eco-friendly smart city 'NEOM' mountain tunnel in which Samsung C&T is participating in Tabuk Province, northwest Saudi Arabia, on the 1st (local time). Chairman Lee inspected the construction site of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) immediately after taking office. Smart City 'Neom' is a futuristic new city built as part of Saudi Arabia's large-scale national reform project 'Vision 2030'. Samsung C&T is participating in constructing an underground railway, which is the core transportation and logistics means of 'Neom'.
Neom City consists of four zones: The Line (residential space), Oksagon (eco-friendly industrial complex), Trozena (mountain resort and leisure complex), and Sindala (marine resort complex). It is being built in the Tabuk area, about 1,200km from the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on a site of 26,500㎢, 44 times the size of Seoul. Last year, Samsung C&T began constructing a tunnel for some sections of 'Spine', the lower transportation network and infrastructure facility of 'The Line' (residential space). The length of the tunnel that Samsung is responsible for is 12.5km.
Chairman Lee encouraged Neom's field executives and employees and discussed ways to expand business in the Middle East. Chairman Lee said, “The Middle East is a treasure trove full of future food sources and opportunities to demonstrate innovative technologies. Although we are currently struggling away from our families in other places, let us take on the challenge boldly with the mindset that we are at the forefront where the future of ‘Global Samsung’ is at stake. “He requested.
Before he visited Saudi Arabia on the 1st, Chairman Lee visited the Samsung Electronics factory in Beni Suef Province, central Egypt, and inspected the TV and tablet production sites. In Egypt, Samsung Electronics established a factory in Wastasi Kom Aburadi Industrial Complex in Beni Suef Province and has produced TVs, monitors, and tablets since 2012. Samsung Electronics also plans to build an additional smartphone production plant in Egypt to target the Middle East smartphone market.
Previously, on the 28th of last month, Chairman Lee reviewed plans to secure ‘future innovative technology’ at Samsung Electronics Israel R&D Center. Israel is a ‘startup powerhouse’ with over 7,000 innovative technology startups, including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, biotechnology, and autonomous driving. Samsung operates an Israeli R&D center and Samsung Research Israel to secure new future technologies. Additionally, Samsung is investing in local innovative startups such as artificial intelligence and robots through ‘Samsung Next’.

이재용 삼성전자 회장이 추석 연휴를 이용해 사우디와 이스라엘, 이집트 등 중동 3개국을 찾아 '명절 현장 경영'을 계속했다. 이재용 회장의 명절 글로벌 현장 경영은 2014년부터 10년째다.
이재용 회장은 1일(현지시간) 사우디 서북부 타북주에서 삼성물산이 참여하고 있는 친환경 스마트시티 '네옴(NEOM)' 산악터널 공사 현장을 점검했다. 이 회장은 회장 취임 직후 아랍에미리트(UAE) 바라카 원전 건설 현장을 점검한 데 이어, 1년 만에 다시 중동 지역을 찾아 살펴본 셈이다.
스마트시티 '네옴'은 사우디의 대규모 국가 개혁 프로젝트 '비전 2030'의 일환으로 구축중인 미래형 신도시다. 삼성물산은 '네옴'의 핵심 교통·물류 수단인 지하 철도 공사에 참여하고 있다.
네옴시티는 4개 구역인 더 라인(거주 공간), 옥사곤(친환경 산업 단지), 트로제나(산악 휴양·레저 단지), 신달라(해양 리조트 단지) 등으로 구성된다. 사우디 수도 리야드에서 약 1200km 떨어진 타북 지역에 서울시 면적의 44배에 달하는 2만6500㎢ 규모로 건설 중이다. 삼성물산은 '더 라인(거주 공간)'의 하부 교통망 및 인프라 시설 '스파인(Spine)'의 일부 구간 터널공사를 지난해 시작했다. 삼성이 맡고 있는 터널 길이는 12.5km에 이른다.
이재용 회장은 '네옴' 현장 임직원들을 격려하면서 중동 지역 비즈니스 확대 방안을 논의했다. 이 회장은 "중동은 미래 먹거리와 혁신 기술 발휘 기회로 가득 찬 보고(寶庫)다. 지금은 비록 타지에서 가족과 떨어져 고생하고 있지만 '글로벌 삼성'의 미래를 건 최전선에 있다는 마음으로 과감하게 도전하자"고 당부했다.
이어 이 회장은 1일 사우디 방문에 앞서 이집트 중부 베니수에프주 소재 삼성전자 공장을 방문해 TV·태블릿 생산 현장을 점검했다. 이집트에서 삼성전자는 베니수에프주 와스타시 콤 아부라디 공단에 공장을 세워 2012년부터 TV와 모니터, 태블릿 등을 생산하고 있다. 또 삼성전자는 중동 스마트폰 시장 공략을 위해 이집트에 스마트폰 생산 공장도 추가로 건설할 계획이다.
앞서 이 회장은 지난달 28일 삼성전자 이스라엘 R&D 센터에서 '미래 혁신 기술' 확보 방안을 점검했다. 이스라엘은 인공지능과 반도체·바이오·자율주행 등 혁신 기술 스타트업 7000여곳을 보유한 '스타트업 대국'이다. 삼성은 미래 신기술을 확보하기 위해 이스라엘 R&D 센터 및 삼성리서치이스라엘 등을 운영하고 있다. 또 삼성은 '삼성넥스트'를 통해 인공지능·로봇 등 현지 혁신 스타트업에 투자하고 있다.
